  • Clothes Maketh The People – And So Can Metal Cuff Link

Clothes Maketh The People – And So Can Metal Cuff Link   The old saying is “Clothes maketh the man” and if that is true it is also true that small details can make or break your carefully thought-out image. Smaller items such as your tie, a tie pin, and Metal Cuff links, can make a very big difference to your overall appearance and to how others see you.     True, many people have ditched the tie these days and wear an open-necked shirt with a suit, which rather destroys the whole image. There are so many things that you can do with a tie because there is an endless range of designs, so you can choose a tie that presents the image that you wish, so long as it goes with the suit.   A Blue Suit With A Green Tie! For example, only a couple of days ago a gentleman was photographed wearing a dark blue suit (fine) with a plain green tie! Maybe nobody had told him that “blue and green should never be seen – together”! It is much the same with shoes. Quite often you see a man with a smart dark blue suit, or dark grey, wearing brown shoes when they should be black. All right, there are no actual rules, and you can’t get fined for getting it wrong, but there are certain traditions that you need to follow if you want to be taken seriously.   Much the same goes for Metal Cuff links. There are thousands upon thousands of designs out there, and it is all too easy to choose the wrong pattern if you don’t stop and give a moment’s thought to the image that you want to present to the world. Of course, many men – probably the majority – wear shirts with buttoned sleeves, but if you want to make a statement you need a pair of Metal Cuff links. But they need to be the right Metal Cuff links.   So, for formal occasions such as a dinner party, an evening at the theatre, or even going to the office, you need to wear a formal pattern of Metal Cuff links that is smart and yet understated.   On the other hand, if you are going to an informal do you can choose something that will stand out more, and even something that will make people laugh. There are plenty of designs out there that incorporate novelty patterns, and there are certainly occasions when you can wear them for fun. But not if you have been invited to the next party at No 10!  [View Details]
  • Sleeve Buttons Still Here in The 21st Century

Sleeve Buttons Still Here in The 21st Century   Many modern men believe that Sleeve Buttons are a thing of the past, and in one sense they are, because they have been around since the 17th century. In fact, the forerunner to the modern Sleeve Buttons goes back to the early 1500s when men started to wear shirts with ruffled wristbands tied together with strings.   However, by the time French King Louis X1V came to the throne in 1643 the strings were overtaken by decorative glass buttons that were joined together by a small chain, and indeed these “Sleeve Buttons” as they were known are still in style today. However, today we don’t have a lot of glass Sleeve Buttons because the production techniques evolved, and men began to wear Sleeve Buttons with jewels attached at each end as a way of showing their status and how wealthy they were.   Fast forward 300 years and there are now thousands upon thousands of different designs of Sleeve Buttons. In fact, if you Google something such as “buy Cufflinks” you get over 80 million results.     Sleeve Buttons Can Still Define Your Status Sleeve Buttons can still be worn that define your status as you can get them in a wide choice of different materials and patterns. Metals available include gold, silver, platinum, titanium, copper, bronze, and stainless steel, and you can also get silk knot Sleeve Buttons, enamel and glass, leather, wood, mother of pearl, and of course a range of different gemstones. You can also spend whatever you like, as you can buy Sleeve Buttons for as little as £!0 a pair and, equally, you can find designer Cufflinks that run into the thousands.    In fact, you will find that many men in positions of importance will wear Sleeve Buttons. Think of directors of large companies, your MP (if, indeed he is a man), your doctor, your accountant, and many more, and you will see that there are a lot more Sleeve Buttons around today than you might think.   In fact, if you want to get on in your career, you need to go to the office wearing a smart suit and a pair of Sleeve Buttons. They need to be smart Sleeve Buttons, too. But they don’t need to be designer Cufflinks. However, you do need to wear Sleeve Buttons of a formal design. There are lots of Cufflinks out there that are “jokey” designs such as a skull, a batman design, a motorbike, and many more. These are not the sort of thing to wear to the office. You need something that is more restrained and formal.  [View Details]
  • Cuff Buttons – How They Work

Cuff Buttons – How They Work   Cuff Buttons have a long history in men’s fashion and have been around since the early 16h century when they first appeared in France. Until those days, the cuffs of shirts had been tied up with pieces of string which, while practical, hardly did a lot for a man’s appearance.   During the reign of Louis XIV Cuff Buttons were developed from coloured baubles of glass held together by a short chain and known as boutons de manchette or “Sleeve Buttons”. By the early 18th century, these had been developed further into studs connected by gold or silver links.   Today, of course, we have Cuff Buttons in an almost endless array of designs and patterns, and in a variety of materials. There are also different types of closure. The majority of modern Cuff Buttons have a front face which is the part of the Cuff Buttons which shows on the outside of the wrist, so on the right wrist it is on the right-hand side and on the left wrist, the left. This is attached to the post which is what goes through the holes in the cuffs, and at the bottom of the post is a toggle which folds through 90° and locks the Cuff Buttons into position. You fold the toggle so that it is parallel to the post, slip it through the cuffs, and then twist it 90°. Simple.     Different Types Of Toggle There are different types of toggle, the most common being the bullet back, where the toggle – unsurprisingly – looks like a bullet. You can also get a whaleback Cuff Buttons where the toggle looks like a whale’s tail.   But not all Cuff Buttons work like this. There are some which have a face on each end of the post and are called stud or button style Cufflinks. As you might imagine, these are not so easy to put on. There are also ball return Cuff Buttons which feature a large ball on the end of the post opposite the face, and the post is curved. Then there are chain link Cuff Buttons which have two identical faces attached by a chain. There is also a modern design of Cufflink which has a dual action locking mechanism where both the face and the toggle move into position.   On top of that, you can also still buy silk knot Cuff Buttons in a range of colours which are made of silk and are knotted at each end. Again, a bit more difficult to put on, but not the sort of Cuff Buttons you would want to wear to a formal occasion or for business. However, they are very, very cheap.   Of course, Cuff Buttons can be made of a range of different materials, including platinum, gold, silver, titanium, copper, bronze, stainless steel, and even metal alloys.   When it comes to the face of Cuff Buttons today, there are endless different patterns and choices. You can have Cufflinks that are made of enamel and glass which are made by hand-applying finely ground coloured glass to a stamped design. Then you can also have Cufflinks that incorporate precious or semi-precious stones in the face, and as you can imagine, they can cost a considerable amount of money.   Many of our customers like our Heritage range of Cuff Buttons which use designs in silver and gold that are based on traditional features, such as our Scottish Shield Cufflinks. These incorporate the Royal Banner of Scotland which is also known as the Lion Rampant. The Cufflinks show the lion rampant in red on a yellow shield all set on a deep blue background. The Scottish Shield Cufflinks make the perfect gift for that man in your life who hails from the north of the border. [View Details]

In this day and age, just by wearing a suit and tie and Cuff links you will stand out from the crowd, but you want to stand out for all the right reasons, not the wrong ones!   We strongly believe in our heritage and our country of birth, and we believe that many other people do as well. For precisely this reason, we produce a range of heritage Cuff links that symbolise your country of birth, whichever of the four in the UK that you belong to. We also have designs for America, Canada, Spain, France, and even the SPQR design if you happen to hail from Rome!   We produce a series of designs for the English, including the Three Lions, the English Rose, the English Lion, and so on. There are Cuff links that celebrate our Royal Family such as the Crown (in gold on red background), and there is the St. George and the Dragon Cuff link.   Shamrock Cuff links For The Irish For the Irish we have the Shamrock Cuff link. This is depicted in white and gold on a blue or green background. The Shamrock is the young sprig of clover that has associations with St Patrick who used it as a metaphor for the Christian trinity, and it is mentioned in early Celtic literature. It was also an emblem of Ireland from the 18th century onwards during the long struggle for independence.   If you hail from north of the border, we have the Scottish Lion for you. This depicts the Scottish Lion Rampant in silver on dark blue, and was on the Royal Banner of Scotland dating back to William 1 in the 12th century.   We haven’t forgotten you if you are Welsh, either. The Welsh Dragon Cuff links show the dragon standing proudly in gold on a red background with the right front paw raised. It was the battle standard of King Arthur, and in 1953 it became a Royal Badge and was added to the arms of Cardiff, the capital of the country. The Welsh Dragon Cuff links symbolise the pride and tradition of the Celts.   Those are just a sample of the range of heritage Cuff links that we produce at Kang Jin Cufflinks Company. There are many more.  [View Details]
  • Cuff-links Can Work In A Variety Of Ways

Cuff-links Can Work In A Variety Of Ways   Cuff-links come in a range of different designs, and we are not just talking about the patterns on the front face, but the way in which the Cufflinks work.   The most common style is the bullet back. This has the front face with the pattern or design on it which is fixed to a post which is the part that goes through the holes in the cuff. At the other end of the post is the toggle in the shape of a bullet which turns through 90°. You turn the toggle parallel to the post to push it through the cuff, and then turn it back so that it locks the link into place.   Another design is the whaleback Cufflink which has a toggle in the shape of a whale’s tail. This works in the same way as the bullet back does.   Then there are stud, or button style, Cufflinks which have a fixed post and a fixed stud or button at the other end. These are more difficult to push through the holes in the cuff, of course. Chain link Cufflinks usually have two identical faces which are held together by a chain instead of a post.   Ball Return Cufflinks Ball return Cufflinks have a curved post and at the end opposite the face is a smaller ball which has to be pushed through the holes. A more contemporary design is the dual action Cufflink in which both the face and the toggle move against the post. You can also get silk knot Cufflinks made of silk, obviously, with a knot at each end. Again, more difficult to insert, but very cheap to buy and available in a range of colours.   At Wimbledon Cufflink Company, our Cufflinks are very similar to the bullet back design, but the toggle is a slightly curved oval shape.   We have a very large choice of designs on the face, many of which are in our heritage range such as the English Rose Cufflinks. This was also known as the Tudor Rose because Henry VIII used it to represent peace following the Wars of the Roses, which lasted for one hundred years between the House of Lancaster and the House of York. The English Rose today is the emblem of, among others, the English Rugby Team. We present the Rose in gold on a bright blue background.      We also produce heritage Cufflinks in other patterns for England, as well as designs for Scotland, Ireland, and Wales.  [View Details]

  • The Olympic Sport Pin Trading

The Olympic Sport Pin Trading   As Olympic fever takes hold over fans across the globe, there is an Olympic sport of sorts rarely, if ever, making headlines. This sport doesn't involve the athletes, though; rather, this competition takes place by fans attending the games.    It's Olympic Pin trading, and collectors work almost as hard as the athletes themselves.   Don Bigsby is president of the world's largest Olympic collectors club. The IOC-recognized Olympin has 500 members to date, and spans more than 30 nations.   "We're certainly nothing compared to the athletes, but our mentality probably is very close," Bigsby told "Sunday Morning" producer Roman Feeser. "I can remember back in the '80s – collecting was advertised as the twenty-seventh sport of the Games, because at that time there were twenty-six different sports. So, we thought that was kind of cool, that we were part of the Olympics! But we're certainly not athletes."     Los Angeles native Pam Litz, who sits on the board at Olympin, said the club and website are a great way to bring fans of Olympic Pin collecting together. "You know, we're collectors and we want to have a way to connect," she said.   We know what you're thinking: Pins? Really?  But this is a serious tradition, one Feeser learned about firsthand having worked many Olympics at USA House, a gathering place at Olympic sites for athletes, family members, sponsors and guests.   Pin collecting is believed to have begun as far back as 1896 at the Games in Athens, Greece. The Pins were cardboard, and were used to identify athletes, officials and media. It is thought that some fans began to collect these pins, and thus a new kind of sport was born.   Litz has been an avid collector since 1984, when the Summer Games were in Los Angeles: "I was a volunteer. I saw these groups of people kind of huddled together. I kind of poked my nose in there [and] asked, 'What are they doing over there?' Someone said, 'Oh, they are trading pins! It's a big deal!' So, I went and stood in line, invested my $20 for four pins, and then put them on, and I thought, 'Now what I do?'"   That's when the games begin!   What you do is start looking for the best and most desired Pins out there – and there are a lot to pursue.   There are Sponsor Pins; National Committee Pins; Media Pins; pins from organization committees vying to host future games; Security Pins; and Commemorative Pins.     For collectors, getting the gold could mean a rare or hard-to-find pin. For others, there's a financial incentive.   Don Bigsby recalls going to his first pin show in 1980: "I went to a ski show, and there was a man there selling pins. And he had his from Lake Placid 1980, some of the same ones I did. And he had prices on them, like $60, $80, $30. Whoa! I mean, I'm not in this for the money, but I didn't realize these things are so valuable."   Of course, Trading Pins during a pandemic hasn't been easy. Both the Tokyo Games and now Beijing have been hard on collectors, but it hasn't stopped them.    "There's nothing like being at the Games," said Bigsby. "Even to be trading by mail or the internet at home, it doesn't come close to comparing. It's the atmosphere at the games, being out in the street with hundreds of thousands of people from 200 countries.   "It's an education. I've learned things that wouldn't have interested me at all when I was in school, and now I learn it because it's part of doing the hunt," he said. [View Details]

History of Enamel Pins The history of Enamel Pins dates to 1800 BC, about 3800 years ago in Egypt. Though not the inventors of Enamel Pins, they were the pioneers of the process that led to what Enamel Pins look like today. It was a common practice among the Egyptian artisans to solder small wire pieces for creating decorative filigree artworks. This formed the base for the separation between colors in the modern pins. It was about 600 years later that the Greeks took over the process by filling the empty spaces of filigree with powdered glass. Enamel inlay was created by firing the artwork. This art of enameling was furthered by the Chinese who used this process for creating decorative jewelry, vases, items and the first Enamel Pins. It was during the Civil War that Enamel Pins took a life of their own. Soldiers started wearing pins emblazoned with unit names and numbers to stay organized recognizable. The pins were continued to be worn by veterans, even after the war was over, to showcase their patriotism and togetherness. It was in 2014 that the pin revival really took off. Celebrities started endorsing them and people started to snatch them up. Independent artists created their own designs which were lapped up on social media platforms. Bing Dwen Dwen and Shuey Rhon Rhon   Bing Dwen Dwen (Chinese: 冰墩墩; pinyin: BÄ«ng DÅ«n DÅ«n) is the official mascot of the 2022 Winter Olympics, and Shuey Rhon Rhon (Chinese: 雪容融; pinyin: XuÄ› Róng Róng) is the official mascot of the 2022 Winter Paralympics. The name of Bing Dwen Dwen possibly means ice hulu, as 墩 (DÅ«n) in its name is a homophone of 礅 (DÅ«n) in the word 糖礅 in Tianjin dialect, meaning tanghulu, the prototype of the mascot. Both events are scheduled to be held in Beijing, the capital of China.      History   Two mascots painted on an Air China Boeing 737-800 The mascot design competition was launched on 8 August 2018. A total of 5,816 designs were submitted for further review and ten were shortlisted. The mascots were unveiled on 17 September 2019. Bing Dwen Dwen and Shuey Rhon Rhon were selected over eight other designs.   During the Olympic games, medalists were given a stuffed version of Bing Dwen Dwen at a ceremony immediately after the conclusion of their event, while medals were awarded at a later ceremony combining winners from multiple events.   Characteristics Bing Dwen Dwen is a giant panda with a suit of ice, a heart of gold and a love of winter sports. "Bing" means ice and embodies purity and strength, the characteristics of the Winter Olympics. "Dwen Dwen", which means health, liveliness and cuteness, conforms to the overall image of pandas and symbolizes the strength, tenacity and inspiring Olympic spirit of Winter Olympic athletes. The colorful ring around Bing Dwen Dwen's face is inspired by the "ice ribbon" of the national speed skating hall of the Beijing Winter Olympics. The heart on Bing Dwen Dwen's palm is a warm welcome to friends all over the world.[7] Bing Dwen Dwen's full-body "shell", which helps the panda to skate, snowboard and ski alongside the Olympic athletes, is a tribute to embracing new technologies for a future with infinite possibilities, the bright colours of the halo around its face are a representation of the latest advanced technologies of the ice and snow sport tracks at the Games, while the heart on its left palm symbolises China's hospitality for athletes and spectators at the Winter Olympics.[8] Some netizens believe Bing Dwen Dwen's design may have also been inspired by the traditional Chinese winter treat tanghulu (糖葫芦) as the suit of ice resembles the clear candy coating.   Shuey Rhon Rhon is an anthropomorphic Chinese lantern. Lanterns represent harvest, celebration, warmth and light. The wishful shape at the top symbolizes auspicious happiness. The continuous pattern of the dove of peace and the Temple of Heaven symbolize the peaceful friendship and highlights the characteristics of the place where the events are held. The decorative pattern incorporates the traditional Chinese paper-cutting art. The snow on the face represents the meaning of "a fall of seasonable snow gives promise of a fruitful year" (瑞雪兆丰年). It also reflects the anthropomorphic design and highlights the mascot's cuteness. Bing Dwen Dwen was designed by Cao Xue (曹雪), a chief designer at Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, while Shuey Rhon Rhon was designed by Jiang Yufan (姜玉凡), an undergraduate majoring in product design at the Jilin Art Institute of Design.     Bing Dwen Dwen is the main Olympic mascot. Shuey Rhon Rhon is the Paralympic mascot.   Reception Stuffed versions of Bing Dwen Dwen have become a very popular souvenir, with stores regularly selling out and people lining up for hours outside stores, sometimes overnight, to purchase them.
